A UDM student reportedly stole four medallions depicting various world religions in an attempt to deny their recognition in the Sept. 24 Celebrate Spirit service, the university's opening liturgy. The student, who has not been publicly identified, entered Gesu Church between 7 and 9 a. (4) comments

Celebrate Spirit focuses on environment

The tenth annual Celebrate Spirit service - an official welcoming of students and staff to the University of Detroit Mercy - focused on the environment with a "Care for Creation" theme. The service, in the style of a Catholic mass, is open to all members of the UDM community and celebrates all faiths. (0) comments

UDM's just-released annual security report shows that the number of burglaries and vehicle thefts dropped between 2007 and 2008 on the McNichols campus. The report, required by law, is available online. It details reports of crime over a three-year span. No instances of aggravated assault were reported in 2008. (0) comments

Jarnevic recovering from emergency surgery

Students and peers of Prof. Donald Jarnevic are hoping the respected philosophy professor will be returning to campus soon, after collapsing in his classroom last week. Jarnevic was taken from Briggs Building by ambulance and underwent emergency surgery for a hematoma on the brain Sept. (2) comments

Teams are being sought for UDM's 10th annual Ethics Bowl. The bowl is modeled after TV's College Bowl with the rules modified to deal with ethical issues. A team of three to five students must answer a question dealing with an ethical issue posed by the moderator. (0) comments

Men who batter women do not do it by accident, according to an expert who spoke at the University of Detroit Mercy Sept. 29. Batterers are aware of what they are doing but they don't want anyone else to know that they are abusive, said David Garvin, chairman of the Batterer Intervention Services Coalition of Michigan.
