Men's and women's fencing teams each earn four victories

The University of Detroit Mercy fencing squads each earned four victories at the Notre Dame Duals in South Bend, Ind., this past weekend.
The men's team defeated Michigan State, Oberlin, Lawrence and California Institute of Technology. The men were led by their foil team, consisting of senior Craig Budzynski, sophomore Brad Coon and freshman Mike Purdy-Sachs, who posted a combined 35-1 record.
They went a perfect 9-0 against Lawrence, Cal Tech and Oberlin and 8-1 versus MSU.
The women also downed Oberlin, Lawrence and California Institute of Technology, beating Cal Tech twice. Junior Ashley Colbert was the foil squad's top performer with a 16-13 overall record while freshman Elizabeth Burgess and Megan McMahon each earned six wins.

Men's lacrosse opens inaugural season with loss to Ohio State

The UDM men's lacrosse team played its first match as a collegiate program in Columbus when they took on the Ohio State Buckeyes at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on Saturday.
Freshman Scott Harris entered the record books scoring Detroit's first goal with just under two minutes to go in the game.
Senior Michael Schumacher was credited with the first assist of the program's short history.
Senior Pat O'Shea attempted eight shots on the day, leading all Titans. Junior Vince Diana and freshman Mike Lioi each shared time as goalie, combining to stop eight Buckeye scoring attempts.
UDM will return to action on Saturday when they face Bellarmine University in Louisville, KY.

Men's tennis blanked by Ball State, women fall to Western Mich.

The UDM men's tennis team fell to Ball State by a score of 7-0 on Sunday, Feb. 8. The contest marked Detroit's first time playing in two weeks.
Freshman Dustin Goldenberg and juniors Pjotrs Necajevs and Patrick Troy had chances to win during their singles matches, but failed to come up with a victory.
The women's team also lost by a score of 7-0 in their match against 54th-ranked Western Michigan on Saturday.
The tennis teams return to action when they host Chicago State on Friday at the Franklin Athletic Club.
