The intramural sports program will complete its second semester basketball season when the finalists in Division I and II compete tonight, Wednesday, Feb. 25, in the championship games at Calihan Hall.
The games mark the end of a successful winter season for intramurals, which has seen the addition of two-ball and three-point shootout contests.
Once students return from springbreak, they will have the opportunity to participate in three-on-three basketball and two more new activities: the four-on-four Air It Out flag football tournament and a badminton tournament.
The flag football games, on a 60' by 30' field and will be similar to arena football, begin after a 6:30 p.m. captains meeting on March 12 in the international student lounge.
Because each team will only be allowed to carry a maximum of seven players, there is an opportunity to have many more teams than a traditional football tournament.
According to Adam Hollmann, campus recreation director, the addition of this sport was intended to get more student participation.
"The four-on-four games allow for more people to get involved," he said. "We wanted to add a little diversity to the schedule, and allow for twice as many games as would have been possible with just regular football."
On Friday, March 20, students will be able to test their skills in a singles and doubles badminton tournament beginning at 6 p.m. in Calihan Hall. According to Hollmann, the tournament will cater to UDM's large international student base.
"There were a good amount (of students) in basketball, and we wanted to broaden the horizon to include some sports that the international students might play in their own countries," he said. "We want them to feel at home at UDM."
Intramural competition will conclude with a track meet on April 3.
