Whether students were there for their organization or for the food, they crammed the grassy area surrounding the fountain on Thursday, Sept. 23.
Underneath the Student Union overhang were tables lined with student organization leaders promoting their groups and encouraging people to get involved. Students lined up at the tables to hear more about the opportunities.
At the University Ministry table, work-study student Natalie DeBoer encouraged visitors to take fliers and brochures advertising information and service opportunities. She said that the fair could be helpful to new students.
"Students can get informed here and then pick the organization that most interests them to participate in," said DeBoer.
At the Alpha Phi Omega table, Justin Wood, a member of the service fraternity, noted that the organization lost a lot of members to graduation last year.
"The fair is important to the fraternity because it helps get our participation up and makes students aware of the organization," said Wood.
The barbeque after Celebrate Spirit! is one of the biggest events of the semester.
Freshmen Joe Treat and Kayla Dmytruse were eating lunch with some friends during the fair and said that afterward they planned to check out the organizations.
Treat said that he wanted to find out about UDM's new hockey club.
Dmytruse said that she wanted to see what sorority might be right for her.
Even though they chose not to attend the Celebrate Spirit! service earlier across the street at Gesu Church, both wanted to learn about the campus organizations.
"We're here for the free food too, though," said Treat.
Across from the organization tables were two long buffet lines where students could get grilled hot dogs, chicken and hamburgers. There were also three moon bounces taking up a section near the Student Union, as well as a band ready to entertain.
