The Titan softball team is under new management this year, and coach Sunny Jones has been making quite an impression.
Jones comes to Detroit Mercy from the University of Toledo, where she was assistant coach. She has nine years of coaching experience under her belt.
A native of Mansfield, Ohio, Jones has been playing softball since sixth grade.
In college, she was named NCAA Division II Player of the Year as a senior at Ashland University in 1999. A four-time All-American, she was invited to compete in the Olympic softball tryouts.
Jones has a challenging season ahead of her. Last year, the Titans finished 7-42.
Jones has been pushing her players hard. A regular day of training begins early in the morning, which came as a surprise to some of the players, she said.
Depending on the weather, they are either out on the field or in Calihan Hall, working out and preparing for the season. The team members have risen to the challenge, said Jones.
The squad picked up a new prospect at this year's open tryouts, which should help fill a gap on team. (Four players have left this year for various reasons.)
Jones said she plans to keep her players in shape so they'll be more than ready to play. She is also stressing her philosophies about the game.
"I want them to be aggressive while on the offense," said Jones.
The Titans have dropped all four of their scrimmages this fall. Nevertheless, Jones expressed optimism about turning things around.
"The plan is to win more games," she said.
Jones said she has no worries about the upcoming season and is "enjoying working with the team."
UDM will take on Michigan State and Wayne State on Saturday, Oct. 11, in East Lansing.
