On air personalities Frankie Blanco and Huggy Bear have been a part of CST Radio since its most recent incarnation.

Students at the campus radio station, CST 91.9 FM, are looking to have a stronger presence on the air and online this year in an attempt to appeal to more students and increase the station's audience.

Located in the basement of Briggs Building, the station is on air Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Students are busy developing their own website aside and hope to feature profiles of the personalities and descriptions of the shows, as well as adding pictures and up to date information.

Bret Stevens, a senior at UDM, said the effort aims help get CST Radio's name out.

"New students probably don't know about UDM having its own radio station," said Stevens.

To reach out to more students, station leaders plan to be more visible on campus. Recently, for example, CST Radio held a party in Grounds Coffeehaus.

Sophomore Elysia Khalil has been involved for two years. She co-hosts several radio shows and is in charge of the newscasts, which air five days a week.

"I work with choosing stories, editing, production and package compilation," said Khalil.

It is easy to get involved with CST Radio. Everyone at the station is a volunteer, holds a work-study job or receives independent-study credit.

The station isn't only about music. Students interview public officials, local artists and people of interest on campus.

"The station is much more than just playing music or talking on air," said Khalil. "We have PR positions, director positions, production and management positions.

"It's the real deal, and we're always trying to take it to the next level."

The station mixes fun with learning, she said. It hosts shows apart from the university, and it allows students interested in the communications field to practice their skills and those who just want to be involved to spend their time doing something different.

Every semester the schedule and shows change.

Thad Shegos, a sophomore, said he listens to CST Radio in his dorm room.

"It's cool listening to your friends on the radio or students your age," said Shegos.

This year the station plans to have big name DJs play for school events. The staff plans on sponsoring talent shows, dunk contests and other social activities.

"We've got lots of different events in the works," said Khalil.

The station also enters a broadcasting competition each year. UDM's CST Radio walked away with two awards last year, and the students are looking to increase their total this time around.

The radio station is still filling time slots. If you are interested, stop by the radio station or call (313) 578-0311.

"We're always looking for new members of the CST Radio family," said Khalil.
