The Titan Fit Zone opened last week, and it has been a hit with the students so far. It is the result of a collaborative effort between student groups and associations.
Taking the spot of where The Learning Center used to be, the Fit Zone is approximately 1,500 square feet.
The Titan Fit Zone was built to complement the workout facilities of Calihan Hall, where non-athletes are sometimes kicked out to accommodate Titan players.
The equipment in the Titan Fit Zone includes treadmills, elliptical cross-trainers, recumbent bikes, upright bikes and several other machines for cardiovascular and strength exercises. It also features resistance bands, stability balls and medicine balls - most things the average student needs to keep in shape.
"It's very user-friendly," said Adam Hollmann, assistant director of campus recreation.
The Titan Fit Zone has charts around the room showing proper use of the equipment and exercises for those who are not familiar with them or those looking for new exercises. There are also two 52-inch HDTVs for those who don't want to miss their favorite shows while they work out.
The Titan Fit Zone also offers programs, such as yoga, in the multi-purpose room.
Through Friday, Oct. 23, the Zone is holding a 30-minute class called Total Fitness 101, which teaches an up-to-date approach to physical fitness for better living. The class, led by certified personal trainer Will Dyer, includes individual evaluation.
Yoga classes will begin Oct. 26 and will be held Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Open seven days a week, the Titan Fit Zone was built with the students in mind. So far, the reaction to the Fit Zone has been "very positive," according to Hollmann.
"There's a lot of use in the evening," he said.
The staff of the school also enjoys it, so it won't be strange to find some of them using the equipment occasionally.
There is a nearby gaming area with an Xbox 360 and a Nintendo Wii where students can cool down after an intense workout session. Students can also bring their own games to play.
The Zone is open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Fridays; 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and 1-8 p.m. on Sundays.
A university ID is required for entrance.
