Fraternity parties to fight breast cancer

With the busy schedules that students maintain and with the stress of homework, exams, quizzes and trying to maintain their G.P.A, sometimes it is important to take a night off and focus on something a little more light-hearted.
Although breast cancer is not cheerful, a party to raise money for breast cancer research can be.
On Friday, the Phi Kappa Theta House hosted a Breast Cancer Awareness Party to raise money for two charities, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund. Both sponsor the Three Day Breast Cancer Walk.
The party was started in 2007 because of student Bret Stevens, and has been going strong ever since.
"I got the idea from my friend, Allison Maraldo," said Stevens. "She and her friends did the Three Day Breast Cancer Walk. Each walker has to raise $2,400 in order to participate."
Stevens said that the walk is 20 miles per day over three days. Walkers sleep in tent in camps that the event sets up for participants. The tents are pink because that color represents breast cancer awareness.
Aside from the party, Stevens raises money through a car wash, garage sales, and t-shirt sales. Stevens receives donated items for the sale. The t-shirts are designed for the party and feature slogans about breast cancer awareness.
There are three types of shirts available this year: a navy blue shirt that reads "Save Second Base," a pink shirt that says "Handle with Care" with white handprints, and a black shirt with a pink ribbon with the phrase "I <3 Boobs."
Shirts come in sizes small to extra large.
"This party has been a success in the past and a lot of fun in the past," noted Stevens. "Not only is this a way to blow off some stress and get together with friends, but you can make a difference and support a great cause."

If you wish to make a donation or purchase a shirt, if available, contact Stevens at stevenbg@students.udmercy.edu.
